With pavement temperatures as much as 66 deg. C/150 deg. F in the summer, barefooters must be careful about avoiding burns on their soles. Our best answer is that you must do what you feel is best for your feet. While some barefooters wear some kind of flip flops or slip-on shoes only while walking on hot pavement, others find ways to manage by moving briskly and walking on shadows (cast by cars or trees), lighter-colored pavement, painted lines or grassy areas. Dirty soles also provide a barrier between the feet and the hot ground.
